Under 35 years old :
the estrogen level is high and phytoestrogens can compete
with estrogens for binding to receptors. When amount
of phytoestrogens bind, they lowers the overall estrogen
activity, because their effect on the target tissues
is less than estrogen.

35 years old : the estrogen level is low
(as in menopause) and empty estrogen receptor sites
can be filled with phytoestrogens which can exert a
weak pro-estrogenic effect. (Phytoestrogens may be anywhere
from 1/400th to 1/1000th the strength of estrogen.)
