Skin barrier

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It has several layers including an outer layer (epidermis), an inner layer with blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles and glands (dermis), and a deeper fatty layer. The skin acts as an interface between the external environment and internal environment of an organism. It has a vital role in maintenance of body temperature, defense against pathogens and irritants, prevention of excess water loss and defense against antioxidant, physical and UV damage.

Inflammation is part of the complex biological response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, allergens or irritants. The classical signs of acute inflammation are pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function. Inflammation is a protective attempt by the organism to remove the injurious stimuli and to initiate the healing process. Inflammatory abnormalities are a large group of disorders which underlie a vast variety of human diseases. The immune system is often involved with inflammatory disorders, demonstrated in both allergic reactions and skin irritation, with many immune system disorders resulting in abnormal inflammation.
